Obituary for John Paul Mahan

John Paul Mahan of Miami, OK entered into his eternal rest of December 28, 2013 at Freeman Hospital in Joplin, MO. He was 82 years young. Mr. Mahan was born January 18, 1931, the fourth son of John Edward and Eva Louisa (Nash) Mahan of Coffeyville, KS. He was raised in Coffeyville. At the age of 18 he married his high school sweetheart, Shirley Jean Schiler, on June 2, 1949. They were blessed with 62 years of marriage before Jean’s passing in July of 2011 at the age of 80. From this union two children, Jerry D. Mahan of Neosho, MO and Cheryl D. Mahan Barlow of Edmond, OK were created. From theses unions came 7 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, 3 sisters and his wife. Survivors include his 2two children and grandchildren and 3 brothers, Wayne Mahan of Miami, OK, Clarence Mahan of Florence, SC and Eugene Mahan of Brighton, CO. Mr. Mahan followed construction work for many years until being hired at the B.F. Goodrich plant in Miami, where he worked until the plant closed. He and Jean enjoyed belonging to a camping club and always jumped at the chance to travel. He was a member of the Retirees Club of former Goodrich employees and the United Steel Workers Union. He will be greatly missed by family and friends alike. Services will be Thursday, January 2, 2014, at 10:00 a.m. at the Paul Thomas Funeral Home in Miami, OK. Pastor Bill Beaty will officiate. Pallbearers will be Jerry Mahan, Simon Mahan, Josh Barlow, Jeff Barlow, Marshall Watkins and Andy Cloud. Interment will be at 2:00 p.m. Thursday at Restlawn Memorial Park in Coffeyville, KS. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, January 1, 2014, from 4-5 p.m. at the Paul Thomas Funeral Home in Miami. Onlline condolences may be made at
